Schedule 04 — Groundnuts

Northern groundnuts. Tested before they travel.

Nigeria is Africa’s largest groundnut producer and fourth in the world, with around 1.6 million tonnes a year coming mostly out of Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa and Bauchi. We buy shelled kernels and in‑shell nuts from that belt, dry and sort them in our own facility, and — because this is the crop where it matters most — test every lot for aflatoxin and moisture before we quote.

Aflatoxin taken seriouslyLots are sampled and tested against the EU limits — 4 ppb total aflatoxin for direct consumption, 15 ppb where the buyer sorts before use — and the certificate travels with the shipment.
Oil or tableAbout 50 % oil and 25 % protein: crushing grade for oil mills, hand‑picked selected kernels for roasters, snack makers and butter.
Dried to 8 %Pods are field‑dried and finished on our floors to 8 % moisture or less, which is what keeps mould from ever getting started.

The journey

From the field to the ship.

Seven stages, start to finish. Scroll and the stage on the left follows along.

01Stage one
01 · Fields of the north

A crop that ripens under the soil.

Groundnuts are planted across Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa and Bauchi from May, and the pods form underground on pegs that push down from the flower. Nigeria is Africa’s largest producer and fourth in the world, so the supply base behind a contract is deep.

02 · Lifting & drying

Lifted whole, dried pods upward.

The plants are lifted with the pods still attached and stacked with the pods facing up so air moves through them. Field drying continues on our floors until pod moisture is at or under 8 % — the single thing that keeps mould from ever starting.

03 · Shelling & sorting

Shelled, cleaned, colour‑sorted.

Pods go through the sheller, shells are blown off, and the kernels run over a cleaning and colour‑sorting line that lifts out discoloured, shrivelled and damaged nuts. What is left is graded by count per ounce.

  • Counts 38/42 · 40/50 · 50/60 · 60/70 · 70/80
  • Admixture ≤ 1 – 2 %, foreign matter ≤ 0.5 %
  • Hand‑picked selected or crushing grade
04 · Aflatoxin & moisture test

The test that decides the shipment.

Groundnuts are the crop where aflatoxin decides whether a container clears customs. Samples are drawn across the lot and tested for aflatoxin, moisture and oil; results go to you before contract and the certificate travels with the shipment.

  • EU limit 4 ppb total (2 ppb B1) for direct consumption
  • 15 ppb total where the buyer sorts before use
  • Moisture ≤ 8 % · oil ≈ 48 – 50 %
05 · Filling & weighing

Filled to 50 kg, weighed, stitched.

Sorted kernels drop into 25 or 50 kg PP or jute bags on a platform scale, stitched and lot‑marked. Bags go onto pallets in covered storage, never onto the floor.

06 · Container stuffing

Counted in, sealed under supervision.

Bags are stuffed and tallied under supervision, with lining and desiccants for the voyage — groundnuts travel badly if they pick up moisture, so the container is prepared for it. Sealed and photographed the same day.

Questions buyers ask

Before you send the enquiry.

If your question isn't here, write to us — we answer within one business day.

Ask us directly
Do you test groundnuts for aflatoxin?

Yes, on every lot. Samples are drawn across the lot and tested against the EU limits — 4 ppb total aflatoxin and 2 ppb B1 for direct human consumption, or 15 ppb total where the buyer sorts before use. The certificate travels with the shipment.

What counts per ounce do you offer?

38/42, 40/50, 50/60, 60/70 and 70/80, depending on the crop and the grade.

What are the oil and protein levels?

Around 48 to 50 percent oil and about 25 percent protein.

Where do your groundnuts come from and when are they harvested?

Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa and Bauchi in northern Nigeria. Planting runs from May and lifting begins in September, with new-crop shipments from October.

Do you supply hand-picked selected kernels or crushing grade?

Both, plus in-shell groundnuts on request. Hand-picked selected is colour-sorted for roasting, snacks and peanut butter; crushing grade goes to oil mills.

How are groundnuts packed and how much fits in a container?

25 or 50 kg PP or jute bags, roughly 18 to 20 MT per 20 ft container.
